Message in a Bottle
Our periodic newsletter to all NDGenes members.

Well, It's been awhile, but here's a year-end wrap up, and an explanation of our plans moving forward. We currently have 280 goats in the database, with 19 members. We're hoping that this winter, when it's too cold to go outside, more people will enter their animals in the database.
I have tried to contact some of the heritage breeders to obtain about the older animals, but most of them have moved. I will continue trying. Like you, I love to learn about the old goats and how the breed has developed.
I have been pouring over the DHI information, provided by Gail Putcher (thanks Gail), and trying to analyze some of the data. We'll be posting some of it on the web site. The current information, in a somewhat raw form is included below. I am particularly looking at inheritance of milking ability, inheritance of size, and the correlation of size to production.
We have just received news that our webserver host is now allowing us to provide online slide shows and digital video. We plan on making this available to registered users and searchers, as a tool to evaluate animals. It's a great way to promote your animals, on the move. More information will be available soon, including ways to have your animals featured on the front page. We are very excited about this possibility. With gas getting more and more expensive, the opportunity to show your animals to buyers far away is extremely important. This service will make it possible.
Dave and I hope that you find ND Genes to be worthwhile, and that you will help us spread the word, to make the database deeper. The more information we have, the greater the range of things we can all learn.
I hope that 2006 was a good year for you, and that 2007 will be all the
better!
Take Care, Pat and Dave Stewart
On the following page is a synopsis of the animals on 305 day DHI test from 1988 to 2005. We are using this data to analyze production growth, popularity growth, and the percentage of animals achieving their AR stars, and the percentage going over the AGS Standard. We hope to analyze this further in future months. Enjoy!
